Schmetterlingsschalen, wie ich sie gerne nenne, sind ein Zufallsprodukt meines töpferischen Schaffens.

Butterfly pots - that's how I call the random results of my pottery.

Die Elemente Erde, Feuer, Wasser und Luft sind die Verbündeten des Töpfers und ein Töpfer hat zu lernen mit diesen Kräften in Einklang zu leben. In jedem Element stecken Hass und Liebe, Entstehen und Vergehen, Leben und Tod. Das Werk kann also gelingen oder misslingen, es ist für den Töpfer nicht voraussehbar. Erst nach dem Öffnen des Brennofens, ein unvorstellbar spannender Moment, offenbart sich, ob es gelungen oder verloren ist.

The elements earth, fire, water and air are the potter's allies, and a potter needs to learn to be in accord with them. Each element contains hatred and love, becoming and passing, life and death. A creation can succeed or fail, the potter can't anticipate it. Only after opening the kiln, a moment of incredible suspense, success or failure is revealed.

Und so kommt es, dass ich manchmal nach dem Öffnen des Ofens und dem Abkühlen eine Schale in der Hand halte, von der ich nicht weiß, wie sie entstanden ist, nicht weiß, in welcher Verbindung zu den vier Elementen sie gestanden hat oder welcher Situation sie ausgesetzt war. Sie ist dann wie ein „Schmetterling“, der sich auf meine Hand setzt.
Schmetterlingsschalen sind nicht reproduzierbar und so werden sie zu etwas ganz Besonderem.

So it happens that sometimes, after opening the kiln and letting it cool down, I have a pot in my hands of which I don't know how it was created, don't know what its relation was to the four elements, which circumstances it was exposed to. The pot is like a butterfly sitting on my hand.

Butterfly pots are not reproducible, and this is what makes them so special.

Beim Betrachten solcher Schalen erkenne ich, wie sehr das Töpfern ein „Beseelen des Tones“ ist.
Nicht allein durch die Hände des Töpfers entsteht ein Kunstwerk, auch unbekannte, ungeahnte und unbeeinflussbare Kräfte gestalten das Werk.

When looking at these pots I realize that pottery means giving a "soul" to the clay. It's not just the hands of the potter that create a work of art, the work is also influenced by forces that are unknown, unimagined and not manipulable.
